A 41-year-old man charged with the murder of his wife had admitted to the Magistrates Court in Labasa that he had committed the crime.

However, his plea has been referred to the High Court.

Yogesh Rohit Lal appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi yesterday.

He was told that according to the particulars of the offence he was alleged to have murdered Saleshni Devi on August 23, 2019.

Lal told the court that he understood the charges. When told of his right to legal representation, Lal chose to have lawyers from the Legal Aid Commission.

He was asked if he was ready to take his plea, he responded in Hindi, “waise to ee kaam hum kara hai” – meaning “By the way I have done this act.”

Lal then told the court he would take further advice from his lawyers on the matter.

He then asked the court if he could say something. Speaking in Hindi, he asked the court to place his two children in the custody of his brother while one stayed with his in-laws.

Mr Tuberi told him those matters could not be decided by the court because it only dealt with what he was charged with.

Mr Tuberi said there was also no need to issue a domestic violence restraining order because Lal would be remanded.

Following an application by State prosecutor Darshika Rao, the matter was transferred to the High Court.

The case will be called on September 18. Lal was told to make bail applications in the High Court.
