Newly married Veremalua Vugakoto has opted to defer his honeymoon and unlock his 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign, which starts against Tonga on Saturday.

He married his high school sweetheart Mereani Colati at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi last Saturday.

The youngest member of the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians arrived at the team camp on Sunday evening all geared up for the Tonga clash and the preparations that follow for the World Cup.

“I have put my honeymoon suitcase under the bed for the moment and will use it when I return from the Rugby World Cup,” the 22-year-old hooker said.

The Daviqele, Nabukelevu, Kadavu native said he has more time in the world for honeymoon but the focus now is on the upcoming games.

“Before I came, we sat down and prayed together. I picked my bag and kissed my wife goodbye. She understands my dream in the rugby circle especially the Rugby World Cup in Japan.”

Vugakoto said he needs to put his mind on the game, but getting married has taken more than half of his worries away.

FIRST MET

Mereani who hails from Mualevu in Vanuabalavu, Lau with maternal links to Nayavu, Wainibuka in Tailevu said they first met while they were still in school.

“I was in form 7 and we were just friends. I was at Natabua High School and he went to Sigatoka Methodist High School,” she said.

“But honestly he used to eye me from those rugby matches and he had so much guts to come forward and introduced himself to me.”

The 22-year-old said she is looking forward to the Tonga game and later the World Cup before they build-up their family.

Flying Fijians head coach John McKee congratulated the couple indicating that Vugakoto has moved on with his life.
