Growing up watching his dad’s passion for rugby motivated Osea Waqa to fall in love with the game.

At 19, he is the youngest of the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua squad that departed yesterday for the opening round of the Australia National Rugby Championship against Brisbane City on Saturday.

The Yasawa, Saqani, Cakaudrove native started as a referee in the Nadi Rugby Union competition since he was a Year Eight student at Nadi District School.

“It all began when I was growing up and witnessed my dad involved in rugby and was very passionate about it,” he said.

“My dad wanted me to be a referee and then I just tend to love to play rugby. Having a background of being a referee helped me in how I play.”

Waqa is a product of the Nadi Rugby Kaji development representing the district twice in the U9 and was the best player in 2013.

He attended Natabua High School before completing his education at the Ratu Navula College last year.

As a utility backline player, he represented the Vodafone Fijian Under-20 in the Junior World Championship in Argentina this year.

“I’m very happy to be part of the Drua set up and hopefully I will try o make the 7s squad as well,” he said.

“I aim to continue to wear the white jersey and make my country proud.”

The eldest of five siblings thanked the HPU, Gaunavou Rugby Club and head coach Senirusi Seruvakula.

Waqa is the nephew of former Flying Fijians winger Rupeni Caucau. His father Pio Waqa was a member of the now defunct Nadi Muslim College Rugby Academy in the late 90’s.

His mother Sereima Sevesa, 37 of Dratabu, Nadi was a sprinter at Namaka Public School and Nadi Muslim College respectively.

“As a mother I feel very proud to see my son continue his career in rugby representing Fiji,” she said. The Drua take on Brisbane City this Saturday.
