All Fiji Airways Flying Fijians reps playing in today’s clash against Tonga has the opportunity to push for a spot in the Rugby World Cup (RWC) opener against Australia at the Sapporo Dome, Japan on September 21.

That was the message from Flying Fijians head coach John McKee after naming his 23-member squad for the Tonga clash on Thursday night.

The Australians under coach Michael Cheiksa are currently training in Noumea, New Caledonia.

“Players know that they have been given a great opportunity with this selection, to play well and put themselves in contention for selection in our opening RWC match against Australia,” McKee said.

“Our preparations since July 1 has been all about Rugby World Cup but when the Fiji team crosses the white line on Saturday this match will be about nothing other than Fiji versus Tonga.”

McKee reiterated that said it is also important for the team to build their momentum towards the Rugby World Cup.

After today’s clash, the coach would have to decide on which prop to drop as he has to take five props to the World Cup.

At the moment the Flying Fijians have six props of Campese Ma’afu, Leeroy Atalifo, Eroni Mawi, Kalivati Tawake, Peni Ravai and Manasa Saulo.

Saulo and Atalifo have been dropped from the Tonga clash while the others also have a chance to show what they are worth.

McKee has requested Fijian rugby fans in New Zealand to come out in numbers to support them on Saturday.

The match kicks- off at 4.30pm
