Former Navua Resident Gunned Down In USA
Nitesh Kumar.

We have lost a great family member, says Shayal Chand.

Ms Chand was describing the death of her close family member, 24-year-old Nitesh Kumar who was found shot dead a few miles from his apartment in San Bernardino, California in the United States of America on Monday night (California time).

The former Navua resident was a reservist for the U.S. Army.

“For me, it was very heartbreaking when I heard about the incident, he was a really nice person, honest, caring and loving,” Ms Chand said.

“He left behind his two sisters, a brother and his lovely parents.”

Mr Kumar was the youngest in his family.

Originally from Nakaulevu in Navua, his family moved to the USA about 15 years ago.

According to CBS television reports, neighbours on Sierra Way heard gunfire, six or seven shots in quick succession that sounded like firecrackers just before 11 pm on Monday.

A short time later, an unfamiliar man was found dead on the ground.

Mr Kumar’s family who came to the scene of the shooting said he had been dropping off a co-worker to make sure he got home safe.

“He was always smiling, always happy, super respectful with everybody,” Francesca, a friend, said. “He didn’t deserve this.”

According to his family, it was Mr Kumar’s dream to be an army reservist, and though they were initially afraid of him being deployed, they supported his goal.
