Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Lautoka made a faith commitment by renovating and extending their church building.

According to Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji and Rotuma Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, the realisation of the new extension was a response to the growing number of Catholics in Lautoka and their faith.

Archbishop Chong in his message during the reopening of the newly refurbished church last week said faith was first and foremost a gift from God.

“God reveals God-self to human beings. Faith is the human response to God’s revelation. The dynamics of God’s revelation and the faith response of human beings is called revelation,” His Grace said.

“Today (Saturday August 24, 2019) we give thanks and praise God for revealing Himself to Lautoka. We thank the people in Lautoka for opening their hearts to God and their commitment to God who is the ultimate concern,” he said.

“On behalf of the Archdiocese of Suva, I congratulate Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish on the renovation and extension of their church.

“May you all continue to serve God’s mission with passion.”

Architectural manager John Grey said the construction work began in November last year, with the Parish receiving a state of the art upgrade after 55 years.

The cost of the upgrade was around $800,000

Mr Grey said the Parish was first built in the 1950s and could only accommodate 200 people. It can now have more than 1000 people in the church.

The project team included Parish priest Father Veremo Dovarua, Joseph Foon, Kirk Kirite, Jifa Tupua, Christina Cagica and Patricia Mckay.

Project team manager Mr Foon acknowledged parishioners and donors who have helped to make their dream of a new and bigger space of worship a reality.

“The overwhelming support of our Catholic communities and approval of the Archdiocese of Suva inspired the project team to move this project to definitive stages and consequently, the much-awarded completion we witness today,” Mr Foon.

V.C Construction of Nadi constructed the refurbished church.
