Fiji National University student Genevieve Philipa will advocate opportunities available for women during this week’s Vodafone Ba Riverside Carnival.

It will be in memory of her late mother.

Ms Philipa, 20, hails from Natalacake Village in Ba and has maternal links to Savusavu, Vanua Levu.

Sponsored by Ba Town Council, her message coincides with her field of study in Mechanical Engineering at the FNU.

“I heard of the contestant registration in school so I thought I would try to compete, but I am not really a girly person so this will be a good way to advocate other opportunities out there for women in Fiji,” she said.

Ms Philipa said members of her family have been supportive of her decision to join the four other contestants vying for the crown.

“Even though my mother has passed away my stepmother and father have been there for me every step of the way since I decided to register as a contestant,” she said.

“Since I am also a loner and shy person they also thought that this would a good way to build my confidence and get me out of my shell.”

Ms Philipa also encouraged young women to be more confident in displaying their skills and capabilities.

“My advice to other girls my age out there is to remain confident and be the best version of yourself because there’s only one you,” she said. The Vodafone Ba Riverside Carnival will be from September 2 to 7 at the Vinod Patel Grounds in Ba.
