Dr Waqainabete: Fiji Has High Measles Immunisation Rate
Health Minister, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

Fiji has a 95 per cent measles immunisation rate.

This was the assurance by Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete in Parliament yesterday.

He said Fiji had a high measles immunisation rate and we have what is called ‘herd immunity’.

Responding to the measles outbreak in Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand, Dr Waqainabete said Fiji was very fortunate that parents and guardians had been getting their children immunised.

However, this was a problem for other countries, he said.

He advised those who were travelling to New Zealand to present themselves to the nearest health centre if they think they haven’t been immunised.

Those coming in to Fiji from New Zealand have also been asked relevant questions at the airport.

Dr Waqainabete said the vulnerable were the elderly citizens and those below the age of one year because the first vaccination was done when a child was one-year-old.
