The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians arrived in Akita City, Japan, yesterday morning.

This is where the Fijians will be based for the coming week of preparing for the Rugby World Cup opener against Australia on September 21.

The Flying Fijians spent the night in Tokyo on Friday and took a one-hour domestic flight from Haneda Domestic Airport to Akita City.

As the Flying FIjians arrived at Hotel Metropolitan, they were met by the Deputy Mayor of Akita City, Ishii Syuetsu, and students from the Echo Junior Rugby Club.

Local liaison officer for the team (in Akita City) is former Flying Fijians flanker Setareki Tawake, who has been living in Japan for more than 14 years now. Tawake met the team on arrival in Tokyo and escorted them to Akita City.

Also, at the hotel to meet the team was the Fijian Ambassador to Japan Isikeli Mataitoga and staff members of the Fijian Embassy.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor confirmed that Fijian 7s coach Gareth Baber and Fijian 7s manager Jone Niurua were with the team. They are exploring possible campsites for the national 7s team when they fly over to play in next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Fijian 7s team won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.
