Qoibau Reds are the new holders of the Taukei Nagaceu Bowl after they beat Nasekula Blues 22-17 Subrail Park, Labasa yesterday.

In a tense match, Koibau Reds led 15-10 at halftime, but a much more improved Blues side came out firing in the second half. A try by Nasekula Blues centre midway in the second half gave them the lead 17-15.

But Qoibau had other ideas and after the final hooter their winger Aloesi Rokotuibau received the ball and dashed past two Blues defenders to dot down the winning try.

The jubilant winger said when he got the ball, he was scared but the blessing from the Lord powered him to score the try.

“We have been preparing for this challenge for the past three weeks and it has paid dividend,” he said.

“I thank my parents, our supporters and the players. They played well and sacrificed a lot in the past three weeks.

“I also like to say vinaka to the Nasekula Blues for their performance. The way they played indicated that yes it was a challenge match,” Rokotuibau said.

Chief guest Mosese Bulitavu who has maternal links to Nasekula village said the challenge will be held annually.

“This challenge is to unite the two clans. It also serves to develop skills at grassroots and probably pick a team from these two teams to play in Viti Levu,” Bulitavu said.

“I’m trying to help rugby grow in the Northern Division given that we are in the B-division.”

Qoibau Reds walked away with the $3000 prize money.
