Afghan Presidential Candidates For September 28 Election

Sixteen candidates will stand against President Ashraf Ghani in the first round of Afghanistan’s presidential election on September 28.
Candidates include warlords, former communists, mujahideen and Taliban.
In February, the Independent Election Commission published a preliminary list of the 18 candidates ahead of the election date of April 20, 2019. Security concerns then delayed the election to July 20.
Now the long-awaited ballot could be postponed again following the abrupt cancellation of talks with the Taliban by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Last month, on the first day of the campaign season, shooters and suicide bombers attacked the Kabul office of Amrullah Saleh, Ghani’s running-mate, killing at least 20 people.
More than 24,800 civilians have lost their lives since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, according to the United Nations.
