A 36-year-old juice seller from Suva who is alleged to be in possession of illicit drugs appeared at the Magistrates Court in Suva on Monday.

Viliame Vunisina appeared before Magistrate Seini Puamau during the special court sitting.

He is charged with one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.

It is alleged that on September 5, 2019, at Suva, Vunisina without lawful authority was in possession of 2.0 grams of cannabis Sativa, commonly known as marijuana, an illicit drug.

The accused chose to be represented by a lawyer from the Legal Aid Commission.

The charge was read to him to which he told the court that he understood.

The duty solicitor from the Legal Aid Commission, Lavenia David, sought time to advise the accused of his plea.

Police prosecutor Constable Sitiveni Baleitaveuni served the accused with a full phase of disclosures and also did not object to the bail, however, he requested for a cash bail bond on the grounds that if the accused was granted bail, he might re-offend as the alleged offence was his source of income.

Magistrate Puamau granted bail to the accused on the bail bond sum of $300 and surety bond of $500.

She ordered the accused not to re-offend while on bail, not to interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses, to reside at a fixed address and not to change his address without the leave of the court and to attend all court dates.

The matter was adjourned for mention to October 22.
