45-Year-Old Man Convicted Of 5 Counts Of Criminal Offences

A 45-year-old man convicted of one count of arson, two counts of criminal intimidation and two counts of breaching a domestic violence restraining order was sentenced to four years and three months in jail.

Govind Singh of Batinikama, appeared at the High Court in Labasa before Justice Vinsent Perera last Friday.

On the first count of arson, the court heard that on April 18, 2019, Singh willfully and unlawfully set fire to the dwelling house of Jitendra Prasad his (brother-in-law).

On count two of criminal intimidation he, without lawful excuse, threatened to kill his brother-in-law with a cane knife with intent to cause alarm to him.

Count three of criminal intimidation Singh, without lawful excuse , threatened to kill Sanjana Wati (wife) and her family with a cane knife, with intent to cause alarm to her.

On count four and five, he breached the Domestic Violence Restraining Order by setting fire to his brother-in-law’s house and threatening his wife.

A three-year-old child and two other people were still inside the house when benzene was thrown the house was set on fire.

Govind Singh committed the offence so that his wife could withdraw a pending court case.

Singh chased his brother-in-law and his family, brandishing a cane knife.

Singh can apply for parole after serving two years and seven months in prison.
