The annual Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge against Police is the next assignment of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces rugby team, says a senior official.

The FijiSUN sponsored RFMF rugby side on Monday night successfully defended the International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC) trophy after they walloped United Kingdom Defence Force 31-17 in the final in Tokyo, Japan.

Senior team official Captain (Navy) Osea Natuva said the players will rest and recover for a few days before they start their preparations for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl.

“There are a few more players who couldn’t make the squad to Japan due to injuries or are on tour of duty.

“They will join the team once the Ratu Sukuna Bowl preps start.”

In their first game at the IDRC, the Sireli Ledua captained-side thrashed Korean Defence Force 92-6 to book a semi-final berth.

They played a fired- up New Zealand Defence Blacks who were backed their patron and All Blacks legendary No.8 Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford.

The RFMF side contained them in the first spell before running away with a 50-7 win.

Natuva highlighted that winger Gabirieli Matakiviwa, former Fijian 7s prop Vasikali Mudu, Filimone Seru and Leone Nawai were outstanding players during the competition.

Also in the team were veteran players like John Stewart, Peni Raidre, Penijamini Makutu and Daveta Koroitakali.
