Repairs to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital boiler are progressing well.

And the second phase construction of the maternity ward will start shortly.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has also been overwhelmed with the support from the private sector in ensuring the hospital was able to outsource its laundry needs.

The CWMH boiler room block was heavily damaged in a fire in May this year. The boiler was an essential part of the health service delivery.

As a result, laundry services had to be outsourced.

“We have done assessments on that. The assessment was done by MOIT and it has come back to us. It is telling us what we already know,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“We will be looking at strategies on how we can move forward. We will be working with the Ministry of Infrastructure. I am pleased that the work is being done locally.

“We have some young engineers who have done their degrees and masters and are giving some good advice.”

“On top of that, we have the opportunities all throughout Fiji with the corporate sector giving us support.”

Dr Waqainabete said the fire was a setback, but the support from the private sector had resulted in normal operations at the CWMH.

The boiler room and the new maternity ward are expected to be completed together, however Dr Waqainabete said there is no specific time frame within which the work will be completed.

$4 million has been allocated in the 2019/2020 National Budget for the construction of the new 200 room maternity ward.
