An “unprecedented’ $750 million dollars donation from the owners of Wonderful Company to support environmental sustainability was announced by the California Institute of Technology(Caltech) on September 26, 2019.

To help for the research, billionaires  Stewart and Lynda Resnick, the owners of The Wonderful Company have pledged to donate this $750 million dollars to Caltech to establish the Resnick Center. Los Angeles reports

The Resnicks own the Wonderful company that encompass brands such as Fiji Water, Pom Wonderful, Wonderful Pistachios, Teleflora and Halos mandarin.

This gift, is in time with the growing unease surrounding over climate change and the rejection of the established by the Trump administration.

A week of protests across the globe to raise awareness about climate change coupled by the United Nations Climate Summit held in New York has managed to secure a good $750 million dollars towards environmental sustainability.

This is the largest donation to Caltech in history and so far the second largest gift to a U.S Academic institution.

It is the largest donation the institution has received and the largest given to any university for environmental sustainability. Los Angeles Times

“This donation will permit Caltech to tackle issues of water, energy, food and waste in a world confronting rapid climate change,”  President Thomas F. Rosenbaum said. CBS Los Angeles reports

This donation will be used to study solar science, climate science,energy, biofuels, decomposable plastics, water and environmental resources, and ecology and biosphere engineering.

Caltech plans to build a $100 million sustainability research institute under the family’s name.

“The Resnick Sustainability Institute will now be able to mount efforts at scale, letting researchers across campus follow their imaginations and translate fundamental discovery into technologies that dramatically advance solutions to society’s most pressing problems,” Caltech said in a statement. The Resnicks are amid Los Angeles’ affluent individuals and socialites.

The Wonderful Company businesses, often criticized by environmentalists are large patrons of water and plastics.

The company was slammed during the California drought for consuming a lot of water.

In 2016, the family’s winery had plowed down an oak forest to make way for a new vinery.
