Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has found a strong ally in Michael Higgins, the President of Ireland in the climate change battle.

Yesterday they co-hosted a social function for Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) in New York.

Mr Bainimarama is the chair of the PSIDS.

President Higgins has followed in the footsteps of Mr Bainimarama with his hardline approach to climate change.

President Higgins warned in his address to the United Nations that the cost of inaction on climate change would be catastrophic.

Earlier this week, during a separate address at New York University, he made reference to the decision by US President Donald Trump administration to pull out of the Paris Agreement and urged the US to reconsider.

Fiji provided a small band while Ireland had a bigger group to entertain. Mr Bainimarama joined the Fijian group at one stage and handled the ukulele (string instrument).
