Stepdad Gets 15 Years For Rape

A 31-year-old Lautoka man convicted of raping his step-daughter was sentenced yesterday to 15 years imprisonment.

Charged with one count of rape the accused appeared in the High Court in Lautoka before Justice Rangajeeva Wimalasena.

Justice Wimalasena said at the time of the offence in 2014, the complainant was only 11 years old while the accused was 27 years old.

Justice Wimalasena stated that after the accused had sexual intercourse with the complainant on various occasions, he told the complainant not to tell anyone about the incidents, but she later told her grandmother and it was reported to Police.

Justice Wimalasena told the accused: “As a stepfather, obviously the complainant’s mother has chosen you to be the protector of her children.”

“You were supposed to provide sustainability, protection and care to the family as a guardian, but you have abused the trust and exploited the relationship to fulfill your lustful desires.

“As a result of this incident the complainant has been deprived of her right to be in the company of her mother and the siblings because she was relocated.

“The victim impact statement reveals that the complainant is emotionally and psychologically disturbed as a result of what she had gone through.”

The convicted rapist will be eligible for parole after 11 years.

He was also issued a permanent domestic violence restraining order for the safety of the complainant.
