The Archbishop of Catholic Church in Fiji Peter Loy Chong was part of the mass held at St Peter’s Tomb in Vatican City and will be meeting with Pope Francis today.

Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome, Italy, is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It is home to the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture.

Archbishop Loy Chong is part of the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific (CEPAC). The CEPAC bishops returned from visiting Vatican dicasteries – as part of the Ad Limina visit last week.

The visit to Rome aims to strengthen the bond of unity of the bishops with Pope Francis.

During the visit, the bishops have a dialogue with the Pope and are consulted about what is happening in their dioceses and their countries.

The bishops can pose questions concerning their situations, and they get to know the initiatives being done in Rome to serve the worldwide Catholic community.

In his latest message posted on the Archdiocese of Suva page on Facebook, Archbishop Loy Chong talks about non-violence and how fake news affected Fiji on September 23, 2019.

“God’s vision for humanity is the nonviolent life: to make peace with one another; resist the violence and injustice that threaten or destroy this peace; and foster a Church and world where the fullness of this peace is the birthright of all,” he wrote in his message.

“Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Martin Luther King were all social transformers who were practitioners of non-violence. Peace and non-violence are fundamental values of the world’s classic religions.”
