Rubbish, Drainage Woes Worries Nawajikuma Settlement, Nawaka, Nadi

Residents of Nawajikuma Settlement at Nawaka, Nadi have raised complaints about rubbish collection and poor drainage in their area.
They said rubbish was dumped along the roadside which they claimed has not been collected by rubbish trucks for at least month. They have also said blocked drainages in the area have clogged water on the road. The Ministry of Waterways and Environment media officer Kunal Amistesh Deo Barman said that they would look into the matter.
The Nadi Town special administrator, Robin Ali said the town council had been providing extended services to those settlements without any charge.
“For the waste management the residents were told the recent extension of the town boundary and amalgamation of rural areas with the municipal council, the Nadi Town Council, was providing extended service for the collection of household garbage in their area,” Mr Ali said.
“The collection of rubbish is only done once a week and that includes the Nawajikuma Settlement.”

Mr Ali said the council referred all drainage problems to the Waterways Ministry. The Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) is doing a study on flooding areas which contributes to some drainage issues around Nadi.
“Residents near town area should utilise the garbage collection services and keep their area and surroundings clean.”
