A 25-year-old security officer of  Nadera facing a charge of sacrilege appeared before Magistrate Joji Boseiwaqa, yesterday.

It is alleged that Amitesh Kumar had broken into a temple located at Bau Street last month and stole 40 chairs.

The accused allegedly sold some of the chairs at the Suva Market. Only 12 chairs in his possession were recovered.

Kumar has been served full disclosures.

He elected to be tried in the Magistrates Court after the option was put to him to be trialled in the Magistrates Court or the High Court.

The accused waived his rights to counsel; however, it was put again to Kumar whether he wanted to represent himself. He then chose Legal Aid, because he was confused by what was happening in court.

The prosecution objected to bail for the accused because he had pending matters in other courts.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa remanded the accused in custody, pending his bail ruling today.
