Charlie Walter Ramsey a Royal New Zealand Air Force officer was the Suva lightweight boxing champion from 1943 to 1944 when he was stationed at Laucala Bay for five years.

And after 75 years, his son Gary Ramsey a retired school teacher returns to Fiji with his father’s boxing trophy to share and bring light about the former lightweight boxer.

Speaking to SUNsports Gary 72 of Dunedin, New Zealand said his vacation trip to Fiji is an ideal time to bring the trophy to its homeland.

“When we decided to spend our holidays in Fiji I made sure that I bring my father’s trophy along to the place of its birth,” he said.

“I’m here today to bring back to Fiji that my father won in 1943-1944.

“I’m really proud and honoured to be able to do this.

“Today I bring this trophy which is 79 years old been in my care for 72 years and I thought I would bring it back to its birthplace so people would know about his achievement.”

The retired teacher added that his father has left behind a legacy that he hopes to pass it on to his generation.

“Before I leave this earth I will make sure to pass this trophy to my son so he can know the history about his grandfather that he can pass it on,” he said.

“Dad could have been 21 to 22 years old when he was the champion here who knows his legacy can motivate one of the grandkids to be one of the best boxers in the world.”
