Ashmita Devi said her family were still trying to come to terms with the loss of her father-in-law after a car accident allegedly took his life on Monday in Nanuku, Rakiraki.

67-year-old Kanta Krit Varma died after allegedly being hit by a taxi.

Ms Devi said she was also the caretaker for Mr Varma.

“The last conversation we had was when he told me that he was going to sleep at a friend’s house for the night and would be back the next day,” she recalled.

“A few minutes after he left, our neighbour ran to our house to tell us that he was involved in an accident at around 6.30pm.

“I ran as fast as I could to the main road. When I got there I saw him lying on the road, still alive.”

Police arrived at the scene later, she said.

“We have started contacting the family. My father-in-law’s mother is overseas. She is coming tomorrow (today) for the funeral,” she said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro in a statement said: “He was rushed to the Rakiraki Hospital and passed away late last night (Monday night).”

She added that the driver will be questioned as investigations continue.
