Scooping the dux award at Suva Sangam College is Subhal Krishna Chand’s first step to fulfilling his parents’ dreams of him becoming a doctor. But not just any doctor.

Subhal has his eyes set on becoming a neurosurgeon.

He scooped four subject prizes including Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The Year 13 student is also a deputy head boy.

“I would like to dedicate the award to the Lord Almighty and my parents as they are the real reason that I am in this world,” Subhal said.

He said he was grateful for the support from his parents.

His father Suresh Chand, sells peanut and beans on the streets of Suva. His mother Anuradha Mani said she is proud of her son as he has made their dream come true.

She said: “Our family is very poor and my husband and I always work hard to fulfil the needs of our three sons.”

Subhal reminded students to always believe in themselves and to know who they are, which he said would enable them to work hard and achieve what they wanted in life.
