Sakiusa Buarua’s hope to see his daughter succeed at school work came to fruition yesterday.

His daughter, Viva Degei Buarua, scooped the dux prize during the Assembly of God High School prize giving ceremony at Calvary Temple in Suva yesterday.

Mr Buarua said not only did his daughter do well in school she did better than expected.

“I was expecting my daughter to be the dux because I’ve seen how hard she has worked,” he said.

“I thank God because my expectation as a parent was fulfilled. Every parent’s dream is to witness the success of their children in life.

“When I was told that she was the dux I was happy and proud of her achievement. I am a very proud dad today.”

The 18-year-old promised herself that she would become the dux after hearing the speech of last year’s dux. It motivated her.

“The speech delivered by the dux last year is what encouraged me. This year I worked really hard so that I could be receiving the dux prize this year,” Viva said.

“It wasn’t easy, but I am glad to achieve the target I set for myself earlier this year. Anyone can become a dux, as long as one is focused and dedicated to achieving his or her target.

“I had to sacrifice a lot so that I can dedicate my time to study, so that I can make my family proud. My hard work has really paid off.

“I am planning to do my degree in commerce next year at the University of the South Pacific. I am studying hard because our external exam is in a few days.

“I want to thank everyone who has contributed to my success today, especially God who has always been there for me.”
