Lakena, Nausori District Advisory Councillor, Farook Khan, says authorities will now wake up and pay serious attention to proposals to widen the road in the area.

The portion of Lakena Road up the hill is not wide enough to allow two vehicles to pass through.

Mr Khan believes a wider road would have prevented the accident on Wednesday and two lives that were lost could have been saved.

“We have been writing to Fiji Roads Authority to widen the road, tarseal it and put a railing on the side,” he said.

“Nothing has happened so far, I hope they will do something now.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Bus Operators Association said it was deeply saddened by the deaths of two school children in the accident at Lakena.

General secretary Rohit Latchan said they were aware that the public would point to the bus industry to step up efforts to ensure such accidents never happen again.

“We are committed to ongoing improvements and efficiencies,” he said.

The Authority had not responded to queries when this edition went to press.
