At 63 years old, Asenaca Cegu has had to endure the long-distance weekly travel from Wainibuka in Tailevu to Lautoka City.

It has been eight years now that Ms Cegu embarked on this journey where she has to leave her family each week for five days to earn a living.

Ms Cegu previously worked as a housemaid in Vatukoula for several years and later had to move back home in Tailevu to look after her mum, after her dad passed away.

“Finding all means to support my mother and sustain my family is not easy. I had to work out something to earn money,” she said.

“Selling flowers was a viable option.

“I come all the way from Tailevu to Lautoka and then to Nadi to sell because Nadi is a tourist town, I sell a bunch of flowers here for $5,” Ms Cegu said.

“It’s a hard life, but so far it has been able to sustain us.”

“My husband and I parted ages ago. I now look after my mum, she is 90 years old.

“Some days I go back home with no profit for the day, but I am still happy with what I do.

“If I have to eat, I buy food too only for dinner or I just have water and mango since it is mango season now.”

At the moment Ms Cegu hopes to secure a tent to provide her shelter when it rains while she is selling her flowers.
