A man was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon after the 15-tonne forklift he was driving went down a hill off Reservoir Road in Samabula, Suva.

The forklift was headed towards Walu Bay when it went off the road just before the St Giles Hospital.

Residents of parts of Reservoir Road will also be without power because the large forklift crashed through a power pole.

The driver of the forklift was rescued by National Fire Authority officers who were quick to the scene and took the driver to hospital in a NFA ambulance.

Winnie McGoon, a juice seller said it was frightful because she had never seen a crash before.

“A man was weeding just metres away from where the forklift went down. I guess he was lucky. He must have been to church on Sunday,” she said.

“It was scary. I had never seen an accident happen in real life.

“I am also grateful that none of the children who live around here were in the path of that machine.”

Another resident, Jale Goneva said he was more concerned about not having electricity.

Police were also quick to the scene and prevented injuries to other people as the power lines remained live until Energy Fiji Limited workers arrived on the scene.
