Diwali celebrations this year will certainly be a bright one for farmers and sugarcane labourers around the country.

A pleased cane farmer from Waiqele, Labasa, Kamal Deo, said the early payment would definitely come in handy for farmers and labourers.

“We the farmers are under the debt of grower’s fund. With this kind of payment fifty per cent of our debts can be cleared,” Mr Deo said.

“For Diwali this year, we want to help out some poor families in our community and take the light into their home.

“One family that we’re looking forward to visit is the family of the taxi driver that was murdered a few months ago at my brother’s camp compound.

“We think of them during this Diwali as they have lost a loved one and their breadwinner,” he said.

Satiya Wati and Vijay Kumar said cane farmers have been blessed early this year.

“We are looking forward to buying new clothes and lights for our grandchildren to brighten their lives as they lost their mom last year,” Ms Wati said.

“We would like to share the joy and happiness of Diwali with everyone too.”
