For 21-year-old Mohammed Shafil, cooking was always his interest as a child.

Unfortunately, his dream to finish off his secondary level education fell short because he had only completed half the year of his education as a Year 12 student of Sigatoka Andhra College.

He planned his way through and that was when he started out as a junior chef at the Yatule Resort and Spa in Natadola.

While completing his tertiary level education at the same time at the Fiji National University, Sigatoka Campus, he tried his best to learn as much as he could.

After working at Yatule for several months, he then moved on to the Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa Cuvu and has since then been employed as a chef there for the past four years.

This year, he was part of a group of six chefs from Shangri-La who took part in the Fiji Chefs Association National Salon Culinaire Competition that was held at the Fiji National University, Namaka Campus in Nadi.

Since the competition is his first, he aims to win an award and hopefully move up to a higher position at the Resort.

Mr Shafil made a saffron beef tenderloin dish during the competition.
