Malakai Kunasau has plans to open his own coffee shop at his village in Malevu, Nadroga.

After being crowned champion as Fiji’s Barista of the year in 2015 and in 2016, Mr Kunasau has established long-term plans to build his own coffee shop in his village.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday during the National Salon Culinaire Competition, which is hosted by the Fiji Chefs Association, the 28-year-old said he was happy with the turnout of participants from the different hotels.

He was among many hotel workers who were part of the Pizza Doro Fiji Barista Competition.

He was previously employed at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort in Korotogo before moving to the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Natadola.

“I got interested in this field of making coffee when I just started to have interest in the tourism industry, all I heard about was cappuccino but I didn’t know how to make it,” he said.

“One person taught me how to make real cappuccino.

“For us Fijians, we don’t know much about coffee and wherever I work or wherever I go to, I try my best to make the best coffee for anyone, mainly at the resort.”

He said taking part in this year’s competition would help him refine his skills in coffee-making.
