Colour plays a significant role in the festival of Diwali; it express the joy and unity with which Hindus welcome their New Year. Rangoli is a medium through which this is done.

Lakshmi Sanatan Kindergarten in Nabua, Suva, celebrated the festival of lights by distributing sweets, having children perform and having parents participate in a Rangoli competition on Friday.

Kini Kotoisuva, mother of a five-year-old student, said Rangoli was one way of celebrating Diwali.

“It is the first time for me to take part in the Rangoli competition and for my daughter to participate in the Diwali dance performance,” she said.

She said it was a big experience for her to celebrate Diwali in her daughter’s school and to experience Indian culture

“As a parent, I show full support for Diwali, which is why I chose to participate in the Rangoli competition.

“To all the students and teachers of Lakshmi Narayan Kindergarten, a very happy Diwali.”

Shayal Sami, 19, who is also a parent, said it felt good to see children dressed in traditional clothes.

“Rangoli making is the way for parents to educate their children of the importance of decorations and colors used for Diwali.

“Looking at multi-racial groups present for the Diwali celebration is the way to learn about Diwali and to move forward,” she said.
