Flash Flood Warning For Low Lying Areas

The Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is warning people living in low lying areas in Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands to take precautionary measures.

This comes after the Fiji Meteorological Service issued a heavy rain alert for the area.

A trough of low pressure remains slow moving just north of Vanua Levu and is expected to drift south over the group. Associated cloud and rain are expected to affect, especially the northern part of the country till later Wednesday.

Forecast to midnight tonight for the Fiji group:

Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls expected over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.

Showers becoming frequent with rain developing.

Cloudy with some showers over the eastern parts and interior of the other larger islands.

Elsewhere, cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low lying areas.

Moderate to fresh southeast winds, gusty at times.

Moderate to rough seas.
