It’s Tuwai’s Time

Will this be Seremaia ‘Jerry’ Tuwai’s year?
There are indications that things are heading his way this weekend.
The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s magician is expected to be named World Rugby 7s Player of the Year in Tokyo, Japan.
It is confirmed by Rugby House that arrangements have been done for Tuwai to attend the awards ceremony on Sunday.
He has come close on three occasions.
Last year he came second to USA’s Perry Baker who is now out of contention for the award.
On paper, Tuwai is far ahead of the other two shortlisted contenders from the USA.
They are Folau Niua, 34, who has been in dominant form for the USA and Stephen Tomasin, 24, who thrives in pressure situations during the World Sevens Series.
Tuwai may no longer have the captain’s armband but he is still the heartbeat of the Fijian side helping the team win titles in Cape Town, Hamilton, Hong Kong , London, Paris and third series title for himself,
Not only that he became the first player to win the prestigious Hong Kong 7s title for five years- in- a- row.
Even 7s maestro Waisale Serevi has indicated that during his prime Tuwai was a better player than him.
This the Cakaudrove native did not agree to as he indicated that Serevi was someone he looked up to when he started playing rugby.
Turning down several overseas offers Tuwai is focused on doing his country proud again at the 2020 Olympic Games.
He wants to help Fiji win their second Olympic gold medal.
His loyalty to 7s rugby is something World Rugby should be proud of as Tuwai’s presence has always light up every tournament in the Series.
He’s our reigning king of 7s.
This got to be his year and there’s nothing stopping him from getting the top award.
