Fiji Gateway Hotel while celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, also acknowledged long term serving staff.

As a saying we often hear, you can have the most amazing hotel, building and facilities, but it is the staff that bring the heart to the hotel and make all the difference to the guest experience, and it is the staff that bring the guests back to the hotel, time after time.

This is true for front office manageress Mainaina Baleisuva who has spent 20 years with the hotel.

She started as a trainee in the front office, moved to food and beverage, housekeeping then back to front office.

“It’s been more than 20 years since I first started here. Now there’s plenty of changes, change of staff, change of management,” Ms Baleisuva said.

“When I started I was really young and I worked with people much older and trying to fit in was hard because they were senior but once I got into the system it was easier,” she said.

She added working at the hotel has opened her perspective to the changes.

“I met different people with their different cultures just by hearing their accents I would also know what countries they were from,” she said.

“Many rooms have been renovated and the restaurants, things like that have changed. All the head offices are on top now and the number of rooms has increased.”

The Gau native believes a positive mindset gives her growth.

“When your perspective is broadened its easier to socialize. Before I had a different mindset but all guests are the same, whether you are locals or coming from overseas everyone is the same.”

“When I started I was single then I got married, I bought my land, my house, my car, that’s what this company has given. I have only one child.”

Her motto is to change mindset, attitude and your heart to achieve things in life.

“You must also be ready to meet different kinds of people, some customers are grumpy but you have to be smart, and you can change their situation,” she added.

At Fiji Gateway Hotel the long term serving staff are the backbone of their operation.

Staff members who received recognition and thanks for their loyalty and service over the years include:

• Mainaina Baleisuva, front office manager (20 years);

• Prem Dass, maintenance supervisor (20 years);

• Dushyantkar Dass, grounds attendant (20 years);

• Evisaki Ratubuli, restaurant supervisor (27 years);

• Pramendra Kumar, housekeeping supervisor (20 years);

• Reshmi Sharma, group finance manager (20 years);

• Venayagam Pillay, group financial controller and director (26 years); and
