Public Advisory: Unplanned Power Outage in Savusavu

There was an unplanned power outage at 11:27pm last night, Wednesday 30th October, 2019 which caused a power disruption to all our valued customers residing in Savusavu for a duration of 48 minutes.
EFL teams established that the 11,000Volts underground power cable which connected the Savusavu Power Station with the Wainiqeu Hydro Station had been damaged during excavation works by one RPA Group Fiji Limited. As a result of the loss of this power cable, the entire Savusavu Grid was without power supply for about 48 minutes.
The faulty underground cable portion was isolated and the power supply to the affected customers was restored by 12:15 am on Thursday 31st October, 2019.
EFL teams are currently organizing necessary logistics for carrying out excavation work to expose the damaged cables in order to carry out repair works.
EFL requests members of the public to verify the presence of underground EFL assets BEFORE carrying out any excavation works, as digging into power cables could result in people receiving an electrical shock, serious injuries or electrocution.
A “Permit to Dig” is required for any excavations in the vicinity of underground EFL power cables.
To verify the presence of EFL underground assets please contact EFL on 132333. Note that this is a charged service.
EFL would also like to advise the public that we will take appropriate action to recover repair costs associated with damages to our assets, as well as report the same to relevant authorities (Police, Labour Department, FCCC, etc.) for them to investigate and take appropriate action.
The EFL sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused to all our valued customers in Savusavu due to this unplanned power outage which was beyond our control.
