Bail Granted For Cops On Drug Charge

Two former Police officers facing drug charges were granted bail by the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.
Deepak Dipesh Chand and Lanieta Keretabua appeared before Magistrate Nayani Kasturirathne.
The two are charged with one count of unlawful possession and one count of being in possession of controlled chemical and equipment: Contrary to Section 6 (a) of Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004.
It is alleged that the accused persons were discovered with 0.05 grams of cannabis Sativa or marijuana earlier this week.
Legal Aid counsel Sheena Singh appeared for the duo, while the prosecution was represented by Acting Sergeant Anilesh Kumar.
Both accused persons understood the charges, which were read out to them.
Ms Singh requested that the plea be deferred and that the urine test results of the accused persons be submitted as part of disclosures.
She also sought bail for the accused persons and there was no objection from the prosecution.
Magistrate Kasturirathne granted bail on the condition that the accused persons provide one surety with each to pay a bail bond of $500.
The matter has been adjourned to November 26.
