Breaking into a school and stealing public property needs to be denounced and warrant a harsh sentence in this country.

Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne said this while sentencing Faijialo Mara, 19, who was convicted and sentenced on Friday for stealing Fiji School Leaving Certificate exam papers from Lelean Memorial School (LMS) on October 29, this year.

Mara was charged and convicted for burglary and theft. He was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment and was ordered to serve three months of his sentence, while 13 months was suspended for a period of two years Mara had waived his right to a lawyer and pleaded guilty to the charges.

He also admitted to the summary of facts presented by the prosecution. Mara was given 28 days to appeal.
