As investigations continue surrounding the death of a Nadi woman who died earlier this week after suffering from severe burns, Police say the victim may have harmed herself.

Aliti Leno Mataniwai, 26 died at the Lautoka Hospital after she was transported from Rakiraki to Lautoka after suffering severe burns to her body.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said at this stage it was still a case of interest as investigators were still carrying out their work trying to establish the circumstances of her death.

Ms Naisoro said the initial report received was that the victim had allegedly harmed herself.

Her cousin, Tui Vidre said it was an emotional time for the family as they were still trying to come to terms with her loss.

Mr Vidre said he last spoke to her a few months ago when she had a miscarriage.

“The last time I spoke to her was when her miscarriage happened and we buried her baby here (Dratabu Village) that was about six months back,” he said.

“We were shocked when we heard she was in ICU, the next day she passed away.”

He said the family had no clue on what actually happened to Ms Mataniwai.

“We don’t know anything that happened to her, we were only informed that she was burnt in Rakiraki where she lived with her partner for a year, they weren’t legally married,” said Mr Vidre.

“We will remember her by the way she was, she was a person that mingled with everyone.”

Her funeral service was held in Nalawa, Ra yesterday.
