Playmaker and possibly the heartbeat of the Fijian 7s side, Jerry Tuwai acknowledged God for his win as the 2019 HSBC World Rugby Men’s Sevens Player of the Year.

This was Tuwai’s third year to have been nominated.

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s half-back on his Facebook page thanked everyone who had contributed to his win.

“Mum and Dad, thank you for teaching me humility, respect and a belief that I can achieve something great.”

The humble award recipient said it was an honor and privilege to accept the award on behalf of his family, country and his teammates.

He thanked his wife and two children.

“To my wife, Ani Folau Tuwai and my two kids, Jone and Lani; the courage and support you gave me every day is unparalleled.”

Tuwai also made special mention of the rugby clubs and unions that helped developed his skills as a rugby player.

“Without these clubs I would not have developed my rugby, so for that I’m grateful.”

The playmaker said his team mates are like his brothers.

“And to my brothers without you guys I would not be here with this amazing award.

“These are the boys who do all the hard work on and off the field and they deserve this more than me.”

Last but a special thank you was dedicated towards the former coach, Ben Ryan who provided him an opportunity to play at the highest level of 7s rugby.

Jerry Tuwai made his debut for Fiji at the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens and has been the face of Fiji 7s ever since.
