The crew of a Chinese training navy vessel are expected to conduct a number of exchanges with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division. The vessel arrived in the Port of Suva yesterday morning.

In a bid to further strengthen the friendship and co-operation between China and Fiji, the ship Qi Jiguang is currently on a friendly visit to Fiji.

The crew were greeted by the Ambassador of China to Fiji Qian Bo, representatives from the RFMF, Fiji Navy and members of the Fijian Chinese Community.

Ambassador of China to Fiji Qian Bo said the purpose of this visit is to strengthen the friendship and co-operation that already existed between the two countries.

“The co-operation that we share is a sustainable one and I’m sure that with the visit of this ship there will be more naval officers going to China or more Chinese naval ships making friendly visits to Fiji,” Mr Qian said.

“I had just learned that 14 Fijian naval officers have been trained in the Dalian naval academy in China and at present there are four Fijian naval officers that are currently under training there, we hope to increase these figures in the future,” he said.

He added that the vessel Qi Juguang is currently on its routine foreign visits.

“It is a pretty new ship and this is the second external visit.

“This time the ship has already visited four countries Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Brunei and Fiji is the fifth stop for this trip and because China and Fiji enjoy excellent relationship, we are building a comprehensive strategic partnership with mutual respect and common development with this island nation.

“Based on this relationship, we have been insisting that Fiji becomes a stop of this training ship.

“This is mainly a friendly visit, those on the ships are mostly cadets and there are more than 500 cadets altogether and among them are some foreign cadets, one is from Japan and there are two cadets from New Zealand.

“It is mainly a training ship for the young navy officers.”

The vessel will be here in Fiji until Friday.
