No Hibiscus Festival This Year

This year will be known as the year there was no Hibiscus Festival.

However, the Hibiscus Festival Committee will stage a bigger and better event next year.

After months of delaying, the committee said they would stage the festival next year to coincide with Fiji’s 50 years of independence.

In a statement, the committee said the former chairperson of the Hibiscus Events Group Incorporated, Hirdesh Prasad, had been dismissed and asked to return all property belonging to the Hibiscus Committee.

Hibiscus Executive Committee, chairperson Vinay Kumar said there had been allegations of mismanagement raised by members before their annual general meeting in July this year.

Mr Kumar said there were also debts of more than $100,000 since 2018 and, subsequently, the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities.

Mr Kumar said to ensure transparency and accountability posts in the organising committee have been advertised.

Mr Kumar confirmed that after the Miss Fiji pageant this year, the committee will announce the names of the members of the organising committee.

He said last year’s winner Jessica Fong will represent Suva in this year’s Miss Fiji pageant.

The Miss Fiji pageant will take place next week and because the event did not take place last year, winners from the 2018 festivals from each township have been given a slot in this year’s pageant.

Meanwhile, attempts to get comments from Mr Prasad on claims by the Hibiscus Festival Committee were unsuccessful.
