Fiji Airways Fijian 7s star halfback Seremaia ‘Jerry’ Tuwai hailed his team-mates while receiving the World Rugby Men’s 7s Player of the Year Award in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday night.

He said that it was his teammates’ contribution that enabled him to shine and receive such prestigious recognition.

“I’m accepting this award on behalf of the boys,” he said.

“I’m always running beside them receiving their offloads.”

Tuwai attended the awards night along with his wife Mereani.

He said: “This award means a lot to me, my family and Fiji. It’s been a long, tough journey, especially for me being the smallest player on the field.”

Prime Minister and Fiji Rugby Union president Voreqe Bainimarama stated on social media: “We know Jerry is far too humble to sing his own praises, but with 18 cup finals, one (Olympic) gold medal, and three World Series titles, he’s not only the man of the year in 7s rugby, he’s one of the greatest players of all time.”

FRU chairman Francis Kean said this is an excellent win for Tuwai, his family and Fiji.

“Well deserved. Jerry has been a stalwart in our national 7s team campaigns and will play an integral part of this year’s World Rugby 7s series, plus the Olympics next year. We thank him and his family and trust that they will cherish this global recognition.”

Similar sentiments were also echoed by FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor highlighting Tuwai’s contribution to 7s rugby not only in Fiji, but around the world.

When asked about Fiji’s preparations for next year’s Olympic Games, Tuwai remarked that as of now their focus is on the Dubai and South Africa 7s.
