Son following his dad’s footsteps in coaching sevens rugby, is the story of Papua New Guinea Women’s rugby coach Paul Tietjens, the son of legendary 7s coach Sir Gordon Tietjens.

Sir Gordon is the current Samoa men’s head coach trying their best to book a spot in next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Paul said his dad has helped him a lot in his coaching career.

“I never thought about coaching until I was injured from rugby a few years ago,” he said.

“My old man is my biggest inspiration in coaching. Growing up alongside him and looking at his achievements is a big boost to me.

“To be here with him and coaching different teams is very special to me, even though he coaches the Samoa men’s team. It means a lot to me to have him here because I can get more tips even though I get that from home every time I get there.”

Paul said looking back the decision to take up coaching has been a good one.
