The Viti Minis Bus Association agrees with the Land Transport Authority to keep the minibus fare rate at $2.

The Viti Mini Buses Association president Bola Saumaka said members agreed with the Land Transport Authority’s decision to keep the fare rate at $2.

This was after a statement released by the Land Transport Authority earlier in the week clarifying the public’s concerns about minibus drivers increasing the fare.

The statement stressed that minibus fares were regulated and members of the public were urged to refuse to pay a higher fare and to report the driver and vehicle route details through text to the number 582.

“LTA will be issuing Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN’s) to any driver /operator charging unauthorised fares,” the statement read.

Mr Saumaka said executive members had their meeting on Wednesday in Waiyavi, Lautoka, to specifically discuss this issue.

“We preferred that the fare remains $2 and it was only some operators that were increasing the fare for passengers along Nadi and Lautoka,” he said.

Mr Saumaka said he would be discussing with the Land Transport Authority how best to monitor minibus operators increasing the fares.

“There’s no reason why the fares should be increased and I will be going to LTA today (yesterday) to discuss some measures we can put in place to deal with this issue,” he said.

“The LTA is there so that means people can directly let them know if they come across drivers increasing fares.”
