The winners of transgender pageants from across the region will be gathering in Suva at the end of the month for the Miss Jewels of the Pacific pageant.

Haus of Khameleon co-ordinator and key organiser of the Adi Senikau Pageant, Sulique Waqa, said this would be a first for Fiji and the Pacific.

But first up is the Adi Senikau pageant, which will be held on November 22, at the Suva Civic Centre.

“The Miss Senikau pageant is a premier event, which has been a favourite of many,” Ms Waqa said.

“The Adi Senikau contestants are winners of the various Priscilla pageants that ran alongside major carnivals.”

Ten contestants will take part this year and each will represent a city.

Ms Waqa said the pageant also helps in changing the traditional mindset many have had towards the transgender community.

She said things have changed in the last decade, but a lot is needed.

“The Pacific culture had always accepted the transgender community. If you look at history, the transgender have been recognised for their contribution in the Pacific culture,” she said.

“Things started changing with the Christian missionaries moving in and removing an important part of history. It can be somewhat blamed for the current stereotype people have against the transgender community.”

Ms Waqa is urging Fijians to get their hands on tickets as soon as possible because the Adi Senikau pageant was always a sell-out.
