Inmates at the Naboro Corrections Complex constructed 50 wooden chests that were donated to victims of Degei House fire at Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) within 72 hours.

Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Commander Francis Kean revealed this while handing over the wooden chests to Sakiusa Kuruduadua, the school vice-principal.

The inmates, he said were supervised by the joinery officer, Sergeant Major Orisi Katonivere.

“I gave my instruction for the 50 wooden chests to be ready in 72 hours,” he said.

Commander Kean said he was happy that they were part of the programme to return normalcy to the lives of the students affected.

He said they had put in their best to deliver what was requested of them from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Sharing a light moment, Commander Kean said RKS is well known for rugby. He said he was part of the Marist Brothers High School team in 1984 that narrowly beat RKS in the Deans final.

Commander Kean said the friendships he had made during that match was still alive and they continuously met to talk.

In receiving the donation, Mr Kuruduadua thanked Corrections for constructing the wooden chests and the Office of the Prime Minister for supplying the materials.

He said the wooden chests would be given to those who were affected during the fire.

“They lost everything and the donation would help them a lot,” he said.

Senior official at the Office of the Prime Minister Viliame Pawa said the cost of the 50 wooden chests was around $12,000.
