Former national lock forward Api Naevo is calling for more International Oldies Rugby competition in Fiji.

A member of the 1999 and 2003 Rugby World Cup, the Nawaka, Nadi native took part in the 9th World Vintage Rugby Carnival at Churchill Park, Lautoka, that started on Wednesday.

“They should do this every month or every two weeks in Fiji for the betterment of former players,” the former Auckland Blues rep said.

“In New Zealand and Australia, they take part in this kind of tournament regularly.

“It’s one of the reasons why our former reps die young.

“There’s no tournament like this, Fiji Rugby Union should have one competition for oldies in their programme now and again.”

He added that the Suva Oldies RC organised activities every week or every two weeks but for the Western side there’s none and that’s why players die young.”

“I feel sorry for the Fijian players. The oldest player for the Samoan team is 80,” he said.

Also playing in the tournament is former national reps like Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Ifereimi Rawaqa, Sireli Naqelevuki, Viliame Satala and Isake Katonibau.

Vintage Sports and Leisure (VSL) manager Mike Godinet said: there are more than 300 people who are here playing for teams like New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, and Fiji.

“It’s a week of rugby and fun. The competition presentation is  tomorrow.,” he said
