The lyrics of legendary reggae singer Bob Marley’s song, “when one door closes another opens’ rings true for Luke Moroivalu.

The former Commissioner Eastern was farewelled by the Commissioner Eastern’s Office staff in Suva on Friday.

He retired in September after many years as the most popular civil servant in the Northern and Southern Lau Group of islands leading development talks among the people.

In his role as Commissioner Eastern, he also took care of development and the welfare of islanders in the Lomaiviti Group, Kadavu and islands in the Tailevu province.

His final words to workers were: “To me, this is not retirement it is just a change of job, a change in environment”.

He said after 36 years of services and in good health, it was the right time for him to move on in life.

Mr Moroivalu said it would be a time when he would be able to fully utilise the experience gained in Government for the people/communities close to him and of course for his family, as well.

He said as a servant of the Government he had the privilege of working closely with the Head of State and Head of Government and he would always treasure the memories of those experiences.

The former Commissioner Eastern reminded workers to look after the resources the government entrusted to them and to also look at the resources of the communities they served and how they could be developed for their benefit.

“Remember you are an agent of change and make sure you accomplish good and acceptable changes for the people and the communities you serve,” he said.

Also at the farewell ceremony was the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs Ratu Meleti Bainimarama.

He thanked Mr Moroivalui for the work he had done.

He described Mr Moroivalu as a dedicated, loyal and faithful worker.
