“I Was Sold For Sex” Says 19-Year-Old In High Court Trial

A 19-year-old woman told the High Court in Suva yesterday that she was sold for sex by a man she met in Nausori.

She was giving evidence during the trial of a 35-year-old man facing charges for allegedly forcing an underage girl into sex work.

Her name has been suppressed by the Judge Justice Daniel Goundar. She was 15-year-old at the time the alleged offence was committed.

Josevata Werelagi who appeared before Judge Justice Goundar, faces three counts of
domestic trafficking in children and one count of aggravated sexual servitude.

The Charges:
For the first count, Werelagi is charged with aggravated sexual servitude. It is alleged that between July 18, 2015, and July 22, 2015, in Suva, by the use of threats or force caused a 15- year-old girl to enter into or remain in sexual servitude.

For the second count, Werelagi is charged with domestic trafficking in children. It is alleged that on July 18, 2015, in Nausori, he facilitated the transportation of a 15-year-old girl from Nausori town to Rewa Street and in facilitating the said transport, with intent that the girl will be used to provide sexual services.

For the third count, Werelagi is charged with domestic trafficking in children. It is alleged that on July 19, 2015, in Nausori, he facilitated the transportation of a 15-year-old girl from Waila, Nausori to Rewa Street and in facilitating the said transport, with intent that the girl will be used to provide sexual services.

For the fourth count, Werelagi is charged with domestic trafficking in children. It is alleged that on July 20, 2015, in Nausori, he facilitated the transportation of a 15-year-old girl from Waila, Nausori to Rewa Street and in facilitating the said transport, with intent that the girl will be used to provide sexual services.

Trial day 1:
The complainant who was 15 years old at the time of offence took stand yesterday.
She told the court that she had met a person name “Josie” (referring to the accused) in
Nausori Town who asked her if there was a garage sale happening at her house as he wished
to buy a bag.
The complainant told the court that her grandmother used to send clothes and bags from the US for the garage sale.

She told the court that when she went to her house, picked up the bag and came back to
Nausori Town, it was after 11pm when “Josie” asked her to go to Samabula and eat and come
back.
She told the court that she got in a taxi with him and went to Manoca where she was asked to get off. Later, she highlighted, that she got in the taxi again and got off with “Josie” at the old Nausori Market.
The complainant told the court that she was told to walk to the old bridge and to board the minivan with him from opposite Lelean School.

She told the court that they boarded the minivan and got off in Samabula and walked to the Gospel School bus stop along Rewa Street.
The complainant told the court that when she reached the bus stop, she saw an iTaukei man
come and speak with the accused and handed him something.

She told the court that she could not see what the item was that was handed to the accused and later, the iTaukei went to a house behind the bus stop.
The complainant said that “Josie” called her and handed her a packet of condoms and told her to follow the iTaukei man to the house.
She told the court that she followed what was told to her as she was scared of “Josie”.
She told the court that she went to the house and the iTaukei man asked her if she had the condoms and he took the condoms, removed his pants and had sexual intercourse with her.

The complainant told the court that after the sexual intercourse, the iTaukei man wore his clothes and told her to go.
She told the court that she felt pain and tired and was empty stomach as well.
The trial continues before Justice Goundar today.
